What We Do
Therapy Dogs of Rockland is an entirely volunteer-based, not-for-profit organization. Our registered teams of handlers and their dogs regularly visit hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities, schools and libraries to bring the joy of human-animal companionship to everyone.
Long-established and reliable research shows that animals – especially dogs – have significant effects on humans’ comfort and well being. These are precisely our teams’ objectives: to provide companionship, relaxation, nurturing, entertainment, mental stimulation, and, at times, physical assistance.
Why do we participate in these activities? Certainly, it creates a more perfect bond between ourselves and our dogs. But another, even more fundamental, reason was expressed by our enormously talented and thoughtful U.S. tennis champion, Andre Agassi:
“Remember this. Hold on to this. This is the only perfection there is, the perfection of helping others. This is the only thing we can do that has any lasting meaning. This is why we're here. To make each other feel safe.”
